North With the Spring – a Journey in Quest of Birds and Wild Places – from the Mediterranean to the Arctic Sea North with the Spring is a Natural History film made and shot in 1969 by my grandfather Stanley Bayliss-Smith. Stanley was a published author, a wading-bird expert and a keen bird photographer and this film documents an epic bird-watching journey he undertook with his brother across the European continent. They travelled North, following spring and the changing of the seasons, bird-watching and visiting nature reserves en-route, eventually arriving in the Arctic Circle witnessing the midsummer midnight sun. He also wrote a book about the journey called “Wild Wings to the Northlands”, an instant classic still available in all the best book shops! https://amzn.to/3EuJPpp In 2017 I made a short film for the BBC’s ‘spring watch’ programme about my Grandfather’s first book – British Waders in their haunts. It can be viewed on my website https://jamesbaylisssmith.com/film/bbc-springwatch-british-waders-haunts/ TECHNICAL INFORMATION This is a ‘best quality’ digital scan (2048 x 1556) taken from the original 16mm screening master that I found in my Aunty’s garage. I gave it a very quick ‘universal’ colour correction mostly adjusting contrast, and I stabilised each shot with FCPX’s inbuilt stabiliser. Given proper attention it could look even better than this version. For more information please contact james (at) jamesbaylisssmith (dot) com +44(0) 7801287924
