I shot this piece for Vice News at the Idomeni Regugee Camp on the Greek-Macedonian border at the beginning of March, 2016. As the European Union dissolved into heated disagreement over shared responsibility for refugees arriving in the EU, VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson and I visited a tent city that cropped up at the border. In the piece she speaks to some of the 13,000 people stranded there and to overwhelmed aid personnel who are warning a humanitarian disaster could be only days away. This was filmed soon after Austria’s decision on February 19 to limit the number of people crossing its borders which sparked a bottleneck. This escalated as other countries on the Balkan route into northern Europe followed suit. The European Union declared plans to formally close those borders to migrants. This was what happened to the migrants stuck in that part of Greece.
